Carboxymethyl Dextran (CM-Dextran)

CM-Dextran is a polyanionic derivative of Dextran. It is supplied as the sodium salt which is a white powder freely soluble in water and salt solutions. Since the carboxymethyl group is attached by a stable O-ether linkage, no stabilizer needs to be added and the solution may be stabilized by autoclaving. Levels of substitution up to 15% may be achieved.

As with other polyanionic derivatives, CM-Dextrans offer a wide range of chemical and biological properties:

• Stabilizer of proteins and other sensitive biopolymers
  
• As carrier for biosensor surfaces
  
• Preparation of low-toxic derivatives with drugs and other pharmacologically active substances
  
• A stable non-toxic, non-immunogenic additive
